Are you looking for a career that offers job security, good pay, and the ability to make a difference? Then STEM is the answer! For nearly two decades now, the STEM Workspace has been expanding, offering a wealth of STEM-related jobs and opportunities.
In the U.S. alone, there were some 17.3 million workers aged 25 and above employed in the STEM fields in 2016. That’s only 13% of the entire 131.3 million workforce, meaning STEM roles are in high demand. Employers’ needs in this area have skyrocketed by 16.5% between 2013 and 2018, while non-STEM positions rose just 9.8% in that same time frame.
In other words, STEM careers are rapidly emerging, and a whopping 75% of the fastest-growing jobs today require STEM skills. On average, STEM workers are only earning around 26% more than their non-STEM counterparts, huge numbers in the long run.
So, the question is – what kinds of positions are in demand in this arena? With the Fourth Industrial Revolution throwing a spanner in the works, we’ve identified a few career paths expected to become increasingly popular in the next 10 years.
These include software developers, statisticians, data analysts, physical therapy assistants, automobile technicians, solar panel PV installers, civil engineers, dentists, cartographers, STEM teachers, programmers, IT managers, computer scientists, biotechnologists and biochemists.
Of course, with this robotics and AI takeover, there are some positions we can expect to soon disappear from the workplace, such as travel agents, cashiers, printing press operators, mail carriers, bank tellers and fast food cooks.
The numbers paint a clear picture. Between 2003 and 2010, STEM jobs grew more than three times more than non-STEM roles, with a total of 2.4 million STEM positions available in 2018.
So, don’t wait any longer – hone your STEM skills and get to work!
