My Journey as a Communication Intern at a STEM Hub

STEM Hub intern

Hi, my name is Chimezie Nebolisa. Before now, I worked as a policy analyst in a media house. I also volunteered with Electoral College Nigeria, where I helped promote political literacy. But I got to a point where I wanted more; I needed a place to grow, to learn new and relevant skills, and to challenge myself in ways I hadn’t before.

Even though I already had experience in the media space, I wasn’t sure what it would be like working as a communication intern in a STEM organization. It sounded exciting, but also very different. I was used to the fast-paced world of journalism and media houses, not the tech-driven, innovative environment of a STEM hub. It felt like I was stepping into new territory, and honestly, I had my doubts. Could I adapt? Would I thrive?

But I took the leap—and it changed me.

Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning

One of the first things I learned here is that communication is much more than just writing and research. I got hands-on experience with tools like Canva and Photoshop. I began exploring artificial intelligence and how it can be used to boost creativity and communication. I even learned project management and how to lead a team effectively.

All of these were new to me. Before, I used to work solo most of the time. But this experience taught me the power of collaboration and teamwork. It taught me that leading also means listening, guiding, and being ready to support others.

Yes, it was not always easy. My biggest challenge was commuting. I live far from the office, and the daily trips were tough. I would come home really tired and still have to wake up early the next morning. But I pushed through.

Stepping Up and Leading

At some point during my internship, I was asked to lead the communication team. It felt like a big responsibility, and it was. Every internal and external message had to go through me. I had to be on my toes, stay updated, and make sure everything ran smoothly.

But being in that position helped me grow. I became more confident, more proactive, and more skilled. It taught me that leadership is not about titles, it is about showing up, taking charge, and supporting your team when they need you.

Beyond Work: Growth That Lasts

This internship is part of the MasterCard Foundation Associate Program, so we also had access to monthly learning courses. Those courses helped me align my work with my long-term career goals. Whether I go into entrepreneurship or work for another organization, the skills I’ve gained here will stick with me.

And I am already putting them to use.

I am building my personal and professional brand, applying what I have learned to other projects, and planning to further my education. I am passionate about advocacy, especially around STEM equity, good governance, climate action, and citizenship awareness. I have already led efforts like the Ethics-Directed AI and STEM Education Seminar held in December 2024, one of the biggest tech events in the region.

Giving Back

One thing I loved most about this internship was the community outreach. Going out to rural communities opened my eyes to the realities so many people face: lack of access to the internet, quality education, healthcare, and even basic needs like food and water.

It made me more grateful, but also more committed to being part of the solution. I have also mentored new interns since joining. So yes, I am open to mentoring more people who are willing to learn and grow.

To anyone thinking of joining a program like this: be yourself. Be curious. Use the internet to learn, practice, and improve. And don’t be afraid to ask for help; there is always someone willing to support you.

Final Words of Gratitude

I want to thank the MasterCard Foundation for this life-changing opportunity. It has opened doors I didn’t even know existed. And to Edufun Technik STEM Foundation, thank you for creating a space where young people like me can grow.

To Mr. Andrew, thank you for being there whenever I needed help, even late at night. You made settling in so much easier. And to my colleagues Maureen, Endurance, and the entire team; you challenged me, supported me, and helped shape the person I have become today.

I will always carry these lessons with me. The journey doesn’t end here. In fact, it’s just beginning.
