When Maryann Samel walked into Edufun Technik STEM Foundation for the first time in January 2024, she did not expect the experience to reshape her future. A graduate of Guidance and Counseling from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, she joined the organization with a curious mind and an open heart. By the end of her service year, she had gained valuable tech skills, made lasting friendships, and found a new passion for teaching.
A Warm Welcome and a Fresh Start
Maryann first heard about Edufun Technik from Cheta, a fellow corps member who had also served with the team. Encouraged by Cheta’s recommendation, she reached out, and was warmly welcomed.
She was placed under the mentorship of Mr. Scott, one of the instructors at Edufun Technik. That’s where her journey into the world of technology began.
Though she had no prior experience with programming, Maryann was eager to learn. She started with Scratch, a block-based coding language designed for children. Before long, she was part of the M. Olive Team, helping young students learn how to code using Scratch, Blockly, and Junior Robotics.
“It’s been a very good experience—really, very good,” she said. “I have met new people, made new friends, and learned a lot.”
Growing in Skill and Confidence
Before joining Edufun Technik, Maryann only had basic computer knowledge. Concepts like HTML and CSS were completely new to her. But she didn’t stop at just learning them, she embraced them.

She also received training in digital marketing, graphic design using Canva, and how to use tools like Google Workspace. With additional lessons in video editing, Maryann’s confidence grew. She began to see a future in tech that she had never imagined before.
“This place is really good for learning,” she shared. “The environment is peaceful, the people are supportive, and we have everything we need—like 24-hour solar power and free internet. We even call the internet ‘Elon Musk,’” she said, laughing.
Friendship, Teamwork, and Kindness
Maryann’s time at Edufun Technik wasn’t just about learning tech. It was about community.

She built strong bonds with her teammates and fellow corps members like Innocent, Daniel, JJ, Obi, and Precious. These relationships made each day meaningful, and the memories they created together will stay with her for a long time.
One of the moments that stood out for her was a simple act of kindness from the CEO of Edufun Technik.
“One day, she walked into the office and asked what we wanted to eat. Then she brought us food and drinks, just like that. She even welcomed us to her home. She’s such a warm and thoughtful person. God bless her,” Maryann recalled.
A Vision for the Future
Maryann is now dreaming bigger. With her background in education and the skills she gained in tech, she hopes to one day open her own school. Her goal is to teach young children, just like she did at Edufun Technik, and pass on what she has learned.
She also shared how much she’ll miss her students.
“Every morning, they greet me with smiles. They say things like, ‘Hello Miss Maryann! I love your dress. Your hair looks nice today.’ I’ll really miss them. And I think they’ll miss me too.”
Why Her Story Matters
Maryann’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are given a chance to grow in the right environment. At Edufun Technik, we are proud to be part of her story—and the stories of many others like her.
We believe in creating space for people to explore, discover their talents, and lead with purpose.
