Every morning, someone sweeps their front yard, yet the gutters overflow with plastic bottles and nylon bags. Teachers strive to keep school compounds clean, but wrappers still litter the surroundings. When the rain falls, roads flood; not solely because of the rain, but because drains are clogged with plastic waste.
This is the reality for many communities in Nigeria. Plastic pollution is a pressing issue that contributes to environmental degradation and health hazards. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, the world generated around 400 million tonnes of plastic waste in 2024, with developing countries like Nigeria experiencing significant challenges in managing this waste
Edufun Technik’s Commitment to Climate Action
Edufun Technik STEM Hub, in collaboration with Green Amazon, is dedicated to addressing this environmental crisis through education and innovation. As part of our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13: Climate Action, we are organizing a series of events to commemorate World Environment Day on June 5, 2025.
“Plastic to Purpose” Competition
One of the highlights of our World Environment Day celebration is the “Plastic to Purpose” competition. This initiative invites secondary school students in Onitsha to creatively repurpose plastic waste into functional projects. Participants can use plastic bottles, nylon bags, and wrappers to create science models, artwork, or innovative solutions that demonstrate how plastic can be reused effectively.
The competition will take place on Thursday, June 5, at Edufun Technik STEM Hub, No. 6 Ridge Road, opposite EEDC office, GRA, Onitsha. Students will present their projects to an audience of teachers, parents, and peers, showcasing their ideas on reducing plastic waste and preserving the environment.
Building on Past Success
Our previous “Plastic to Purpose” competition in 2024 witnessed remarkable creativity from students who transformed wraps into useful items. Projects included eco-friendly art works, and decorative items, all made from recycled materials.

These initiatives not only highlighted the students’ ingenuity but also emphasized the potential of recycling in mitigating plastic pollution.
Call to Action
We encourage all secondary schools, teachers, and students to participate in this year’s competition. It is an opportunity to engage in meaningful environmental action and inspire others to consider sustainable practices.
Conclusion
Plastic pollution is a challenge that requires collective effort to overcome. Through educational programs like the “Plastic to Purpose” competition, Edufun Technik aims to empower young minds to develop innovative solutions for a cleaner, healthier environment. Join us in making a difference this World Environment Day.
