Bridging All Divides for an Inclusive Digital Transformation: Celebrating International Girls in ICT Day

International Girls in ICT Day

Each year, the world marks International Girls in ICT Day to spotlight the importance of digital inclusion for girls and young women. This year’s theme, “Bridging All Divides for an Inclusive Digital Transformation,” speaks directly to the work we do every day at Edufun Technik STEM Hub.

In many parts of Nigeria, girls are still underrepresented in tech and digital fields. But things are changing, and we are proud to be part of that change. By creating opportunities through STEM education in Nigeria, we are helping to close the gender gap and empower more girls to step into the world of technology with confidence.

For us, bridging the divide starts with visibility, access, and support. Across Nigeria and other African countries, the gender gap in technology is not just about access to gadgets, it’s about creating pathways that let girls explore, learn, and succeed in tech spaces that often leave them behind. That is why we are deeply committed to boosting STEM education in Nigeria, especially among girls.

Why Girls in ICT Matters

Girls are curious, creative, and capable of shaping the future. But without access to technology and digital tools, many never get the chance. That is why International Girls in ICT Day is important, it reminds us that everyone, regardless of gender or background, deserves a seat at the digital table.

Many girls are still being left behind. Whether it is due to outdated mindsets, lack of mentors, or limited learning environments, the result is the same: girls are underrepresented in science and tech fields. In Nigeria, especially, these challenges are amplified in underserved communities.

We believe the best way to bridge the digital divide is through early education and hands-on experiences. That is why we focus on Girls in STEM Nigeria, creating learning spaces where girls can explore science, engineering, coding, and robotics without fear or limitation.

Our Work in Action

At Edufun Technik STEM Hub, we are not just talking about change, we are making it happen. From hosting workshops to organizing school outreach programs, our EduFun Technik STEM programs are designed to build digital confidence and practical skills.

Through coding for kids in Nigeria, girls learn how to write programs and build applications. They also gain experience with AI and robotics in Nigerian schools, where they can design and program their own smart machines. This gives them real-world knowledge and shows them how exciting tech can be.

Programs That Are Making a Difference

At the heart of our work is the Queen Afrique STEM Academy Program – Coding Girls. This non-profit initiative tackles the issue of girls dropping out of tech subjects early. We run both summer immersion programs and after-school STEM clubs. Since 2012, we have empowered over 2,000 girls, many of whom have gone on to study computer science at top universities in Nigeria and the US.

Through this program, our girls have even brought home international honors, winning a global tech gold award in Silicon Valley, USA.

We are proud that companies are beginning to see this talent pipeline. Many now offer internships and job placements for our Coding Girls alumni.

But we are not stopping there.

Through the Mind-the-Gap Project, we work to close the gender gap in STEM. Our in-school and out-of-school programs aim to support girls by also empowering their teachers. We welcome partnerships with local and international organizations that believe in gender equality in digital learning.

The STEM-Women Mentorship Program is another tool we use. Mentorship matters. Girls need to see women like them doing amazing things in science and tech. This program pairs mentors with girls and trains them to provide guidance, motivation, and advice.

Our Young Designers & Coders Club gives girls a safe and fun space to network, collaborate, and feel supported in tech. These relaxed, informal gatherings even include men, as long as they are invited by a woman. We want to build a culture of inclusion from the ground up.

Partnering to Break Barriers

We know that real change comes through partnerships. That is why we work with schools, religious bodies, and community leaders to promote tech literacy in underserved communities. One example is our partnership with the Anglican Diocese of Nnewi, which launched a Coding and Robotics Training Workshop in secondary schools. It is also the first to create a Diocesan Centre for Coding and Robotics.

These steps are vital for building a strong STEM curriculum for African students. When girls grow up learning these skills, they do not just catch up—they lead.

Our Role Model: Uchenna, STEM Queen of Africa

Inspiring figures like Uchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, the STEM Queen of Africa, remind us why this work matters. Uchenna’s story is proof that with the right support, girls from any background can rise to become leaders in STEM. Her work and passion have helped push the boundaries of what is possible for young African girls in technology.

At Edufun Technik, we honor her example by mentoring girls, hosting training for teachers, and offering robotics kits and learning tools in schools across Nigeria.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, we are reminded of the road ahead. Tech literacy in underserved communities is more important now than ever. An inclusive digital future can only happen if we lift everyone along the way.

We are proud of how far we have come, but we know there is still work to do. Every girl deserves a chance to explore her potential in a digital world. That means more training, more mentorship, and more investment in schools and educators.

We salute our partners, our mentors, our team, and most importantly, the girls who show up, stay curious, and build something new every day.

We invite you to join us. Whether you are a teacher, parent, or organization, you can help us bridge the gap.

Let us build a world where every girl feels welcome in tech.

Let us create a future where digital transformation includes everyone.

Let us make sure no one is left behind.

Happy International Girls in ICT Day from all of us at Edufun Technik STEM Hub!
